Endless Beginnings

Lately I have been reminded that every ending is also a beginning. It sounds trite, but it holds true. When something comes to an end, something else, even if it is a new normal, must begin.

Over the last week, I have been reminded of this because of three scenarios surrounding those near to me. Firstly, my students started school this week and it was quite obvious that some students were hesitant to be vulnerable at their new school because they have come from what was comfortable at their old school, to what is new to them at our school. This is one example of an exciting new beginning taking place amidst the grief of a school transition, which is a big part of life.

Secondly, a dear friend lost her job unexpectedly recently. Although we know God has plans for her, we do not know what those are yet. So we wait and we ask and we pray. There is excitement in the unknown and promised new opportunities to come eventually amidst the grief of sudden job loss that leads to dramatic life change.

Thirdly, a friend is struggling through the loss of an engagement. He was committed to marrying someone and they decided they are not going to follow through with that plan of marriage. Although we know that is not the end of the world, it is still the end of the world as he knew it before having to move forward into new ways of life without this person. There is hope in knowing healing is possible amidst the current massive hole grief has created through the loss of this significant relationship.

Over and over again, we can see God’s provision and grace amidst our struggles. Let our joy this week come from knowing He already has plans (multiple) and they are for our good, even when we do not yet see them or understand them. He gives us a hope and a future despite every grief stricken ending we must face. Let our joy amidst the sorrow be the ongoing promise of endless beginnings!

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” - Jeremiah 29:11
